In this article, Thomas Rodwell and Gavin Dallow, chartered accountants and business valuation experts from Rodwell Dallow Advisory, consider the Family Court’s use of historical valuations in light of XW v XH and other leading cases. Attention is drawn to the differing approaches that have been adopted when assessing the value of businesses at the start of the marriage and the question as to whether experts are still required to perform this task. In their view, the answer is a qualified yes and they highlight the relevant factors that business valuation experts need to consider when performing historical valuations.
