In this article I examine the impact of AI including its uses; the challenges and risks posed by its increased adoption in family law; and the extent to which governance may be required in the future. AI is an increasingly pervasive force in our lives. In the family justice system AI could improve the experience of litigants through language translation; virtual assistants; and legal advice. Greater efficiencies from processing or administrative tasks can be achieving for document review drafting and case management. Decision making is supported in online dispute resolution predictive analysis and risk management. AI is useful for summarising large bodies of text; writing presentations; composing emails and memoranda. Challenges to the use of AI include legal technical and ethical issues in the context of how they are used and the impact on the people using them. Transparency about the use of AI is critical to secure public trust and allow effective regulation. Addressing bias in AI is complex and challenging and requires ongoing monitoring.
