This article provides an introduction to the collaborative process including how it works when it can be used and its potential for interaction with the wide range of other family law options available. The Family Procedure (Amendment No 2) Rules2023 came into effect in April 2024 widening the definition of non-court dispute resolution (NCDR) to include the collaborative process. This article explores the advantages of the collaborative process which can be promoted as a proactive supportive child-focused and cost-effective way for couples to resolve financial and child arrangements and navigate the necessary legal processes with relative calm fully enabled to do so by their collaboratively trained lawyers. Collaborative lawyers are increasingly working in an interdisciplinary way with family consultants financial neutrals and other therapeutic and financial professionals to provide all round support to clients. Resolution runs regular foundation training for lawyers who would like to work in this rewarding way and it is hoped that those reading this article who are not already collaboratively trained may be encouraged to consider training.
