Narcissism has increasingly been used as a term to describe anyone who demonstrates difficult or undesirable behaviour. In reality it is a very specific personality disorder which is capable of being clearly identified if you know what to look out for. Due to their complete lack of empathy narcissists are very poor at maintaining healthy long term relationships and as a consequence family law professionals are highly likely to encounter such individuals regularly either as their client or on the other side of a case.

Narcissists are extremely charming and persuasive. It is as easy for you to be taken in by them as it was for your partner. A understanding of the very specific behaviour pattern which may be demonstrated is therefore extremely important if you are to provide the best possible service for you client – and also to protect yourself.
