David Ryden, Local Authority Solicitor. There have been a series of high profile cases in recent years involving the deaths of infants and children. Individuals and experts involved have been vilified and discredited in the media and parents have actively campaigned in the media in attempts to challenge allegations that they have harmed a child, or worse. Miscarriages of justice have been alleged on several occasions. This article looks at some of the recent high profile cases involving infant deaths and considers the impact of the case of R v Cannings [2004] EWCA Crim 1, [2004] 1 All ER 72 and the guidance given by the courts, the response of government and the media, and the ways in which there have been attempts to improve the accuracy of what is reported. See March [2007] Fam Law for the full article.
