Deaf parents: assessment and good practice

In Re A and B (Children) (deaf parent: assessment and practice) [2021] EWFC 10, Elizabeth Isaacs QC, sitting as a Deputy High Court Judge, gave useful guidance on assessment and good practice for local authorities working with parents with disabilities.

The major practice point to be taken from this decision is that it is crucial that deafness is identified at the very first opportunity so that the court process can be adjusted to meet those needs and so that assessments of all kinds can be appropriately tailored. If that is not done, lawyers, local authorities and Courts all open themselves up to the risk of breach of duty and breach of the Equality Act 2010.
