A Day in the Life of a CAFCASS Legal Lawyer

Charlotte McCafferty, Head of Legal Services, CAFCASS. Well, maybe not a day in the life of, because the work of a Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (CAFCASS) lawyer is so varied that a description of one day would not do it justice, but this article describes the nature of the work undertaken at CAFCASS Legal, and explains the recent restructuring. The term CAFCASS Legal now refers solely to the six in-house CAFCASS lawyers who continue as before, to work closely alongside the High Court team. The main difference in the working relationship is that the lawyers no longer manage the caseworkers, but have more of a traditional lawyer/client relationship with them. The work the CAFCASS Legal lawyers undertake can be split into seven areas which are summarised in the article. See February [2006] Fam Law 131 for the full article.
