The Honourable Mr Justice Stanley Burnton has been appointed a Lord Justice of Appeal following the death of Lord Justice Nicholas Pumfrey on 24 December 2007.
Mr Justice Burnton, 65, was called to the Bar, by the Middle Temple, in 1965 and was made a Bencher in 1991. He was appointed as a QC in 1982, and was a Recorder from 1994 to 2000. He became a Judge of the High Court of Justice, Queen's Bench division in 2000.
Mr Justice Burnton was knighted in 2000.
The appointment will take effect from 21 April 2008.
Mr Justice Burnton will continue in his role as Head of Modernisation, IT and Estates.
He has been appointed as one of three judicial representatives on the new Board of HM Courts Service (the others being Lord Justice Leveson and District Judge Michael Walker).
